Ontdek Jávea

Culture, old town & markets

Back to Discover Jávea

Jávea's historic centre sits on a hill around the gothic church and is the oldest of the three districts. The narrow streets of local tosca sandstone give it its character. The harbour, Duanes de la Mar, is the second cultural hub with its own church and fishing history.

Iglesia de San Bartolomé

A 14th-century gothic fortress church, built of local tosca stone and a national monument since 1931. The tower once served as a lookout against pirates.

Mercat Municipal

Covered market hall in a former convent on the Plaza Celestino Pons. Meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and local cheese daily. Open Monday to Saturday morning.

Thursday market

Weekly open-air market on the Plaza de la Constitución, every Thursday from 8.30 to 14.00. Fresh vegetables, cheese, herbs, flowers and crafts, easy to combine with the old town.

Duanes de la Mar (harbour)

The historic fishing district with the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, whose roof has the shape of an upturned fishing boat. The fish auction can be visited in the evening.

Les Fogueres de Sant Joan

The biggest local festival, around 24 June. Parades in Valencian costume, the burning of large figures and fireworks, in the style of the Fallas of Valencia.

Moros i Cristians

An annual historic festival in the harbour (14 to 22 July), commemorating the Reconquista. Colourful costume parades, reenacted battles and music.
